Santoor Music for Wellbeing — Independent Research
Deepal’s independent study, Santoor Music for Wellbeing, explores how Indian classical ragas performed on the santoor can support emotional balance, mental clarity, and inner calm. Drawing from traditional raga theory, modern music therapy findings, and acoustic analysis, her research examines how the santoor’s resonant tones, polyphonic textures, and shimmering overtones interact with the nervous system.
A key focus of the study is the double impact created when the calming qualities of Indian classical ragas are played on the santoor. While ragas influence mood, focus, and circadian rhythms through melodic structure, the santoor amplifies these effects through its sustained resonance, layered harmonics, and meditative vibration field.
Across 24 ragas, the research maps time-of-day associations, emotional responses, and wellbeing outcomes, presenting one of the first structured frameworks centered specifically on the therapeutic potential of the santoor. This work highlights the instrument not only as a classical art form, but as a powerful and accessible tool for relaxation, reflection, and holistic wellness.
